Dr. Shawn Smith
Dr. Shawn Smith is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi where he conducts the Concert Band, teaches courses in Conducting and Music Education, and serves as head of the wind and percussion division. Smith holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from Arizona State University, and Masters and Bachelors degrees from Louisiana State University and Boise State University respectively.
Prior to his position at TAMUCC Dr. Smith worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Music at both Arizona State University and Louisiana State University. As a Teaching Assistant with the Sun Devil Marching Band Smith arranged music and wrote drill which was performed before nearly 50,000 spectators in the 2004 Vitalis Sun Bowl held at the University of Texas El Paso.
As a public school teacher, Dr. Smith served as Director of Bands and Orchestra at Meridian High School (Idaho) where he administered a comprehensive instrumental music program. While at Meridian High School, ensembles under his direction were distinguished as among the finest in the state.
An accomplished trumpeter, Dr. Smith has served as principal trumpet in the top ensembles at Louisiana State and Boise State. He has also performed with the Corpus Christi Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra (Idaho), the Acadiana Symphony (Louisiana), and Keith Brion’s New Sousa Band. Dr. Smith also played principal trumpet in the Louisiana 2003 CBDNA Intercollegiate Honor Band under the baton of H. Robert Reynolds.
Dr. Smith recently presented research on the wind music of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos at the national conference of the College Music Society. He has been included in Who’s Who Among American Teachers, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi. He also holds memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the College Music Society, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles.
